Summer 2021 STEM Santa Fe Camps

SUMMER 2021 STEM SANTA FE CAMPS

View Flyer Here

It is our pleasure to offer a variety of STEM/STEAM camps in-person this summer. Each camp is one week long and you can sign up your child for one or more camps based on their interests and grade level.

Please Note:

    • Due to our funding restrictions, priority is given to students in Northern New Mexico in the following counties: Santa Fe, Taos, San Miguel, Mora, Sandoval, Rio Arriba, and Los Alamos.
    • These are in-person camps, and of course following CDC and NM Department of Health guidelines.
    • All camps will run from 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. Lunch Included.
    • Registration is on a first come first serve basis and space is limited. You will receive an email informing you that your child has been placed on a waiting list if limit is reached.
    • The registration fee is $25 for each one-week camp. Waivers available.
    • On Friday at the end of each camp, we will have a community showcase where students show and demo what they learned during the camp. Parents and sponsors are invited to attend.
    • Lunch and T-shirt are provided to each camper, and thanks to our Title Sponsor Wildflower International.
    • For the high school camps the week of June 7 @SFCC or June 21 @NNMC, students can earn 1 college credit from NM Tech for attending each of those camps.
    • For those attending the high school camps the week of June 7 @SFCC, there is a possibility of hiring those students as interns part-time for the rest of the summer.
Week of June 7-11 at Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe, NM
For students rising into 9th-12th grade
Pick Camp 1 OR Camp 2 for this week as they will be held at the same time.

Camp 1: “Making a Miniaturized Chemical Sensor”

Why is Chemistry called the Central Science? In this mini-course, students will learn how Chemistry is connected with Biology, Biomedical Sciences, and Engineering to develop a sensor sensitive to a clinically important bio-molecule. Students will learn how chemical reactions can be performed in miniaturized devices with few microliters of samples instead of conventional test tubes. Students will also gain hands-on experience of assembling a chemical sensor and be familiarized with how visible light is utilized to monitor chemical reactions.

Camp 2: “Building and Flying Drones”

Students will learn different aspects of unmanned air systems. They will also become familiar with the design challenges of space and marine drones, existing methods for increasing the drones’ endurance, and various control, guidance, navigation, and manufacturing techniques. Students will participate in the design, CAD modeling, aerodynamic analysis, simulation in XFLR5 software and manufacturing of a small fixed-wing micro air vehicle.

These camps are in partnership with New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech).

Students can earn 1 college credit from NM Tech for attending one of these camps.

Week of June 14-18 at Northern New Mexico College in Española, NM
For students rising into 7th-9th grade.
Camp 3: “Building Motion Sensors with Arduino”

Come play with LEDs, motors, distance sensors and more. Using these elements we will build and code a smart one lane bridge model that will safely direct traffic across a bridge.

No coding or engineering experience required

Week of June 21-25 at Northern New Mexico College in Española, NM
For students rising into 9th-12th grade
Camp 4: “Building and Flying Drones”
This camp is full.Students will learn different aspects of unmanned air systems.

Camp 5: “Volcanoes, dinosaurs and earthquakes of New Mexico”
This camp has been canceled.

Did you know that dinosaurs once roamed the land that is now New Mexico? Or that most of the state was once covered by a shallow sea? Are you interested in how the mountains in New Mexico were formed or if there is an extinct volcano near your town? Do you want to learn about the local rocks and how to identify the minerals that they contain? Then this camp is for you.

You will get hands-on experience in using different tests and analyses to identify rocks and minerals. You will learn about great places in the state to visit to continue your exploration of geology. And we will let you know about educational and career opportunities in Earth Science fields.

These camps are in partnership with New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech).
Students can earn 1 college credit from NM Tech for attending one of these camps.

Week of June 28- July 2 at Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe, NM
For students rising 5th-7th grade
This camp was full. A second section has opened. Very few spots left.
Camp 6: “STEAM All around us”

Workshops and activities on a wide range of STEAM topics from 3D design to DNA forensics to coding with microbits to engineering and math and art activities.

Disclaimer: Some of these activities could be a repeat from other STEM Santa Fe programs

Week of July 12 – 16 at Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe, NM
For girls rising into 6th-10th grade
Camp 7: “App Design for Social Justice”
For Girls only coding camp
(No coding experience required)
Week of July 19-23 at Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe, NM
For students rising into 7th-9th grade
Camp 8: “Building Smart Greenhouse with Arduino”

Have you ever wanted a plant that will take care of itself? Come play with arduinos, circuits and coding to build a miniature greenhouse that will water and regulate the temperature of your plants!

Some coding experience required.
A minimum of 2 hours of block coding would be good. Attending the App Design camp on July 12-16 qualifies as experience.
